Fall_PrePro_Assignment_ animated short

  Haley Frank animated short

I initially picked Geri's Game by Pixar

Most of the story is being shown visually with only some audio assistance. I really enjoy picking apart the actions that divide the character into two personalities.

However, since that was used in class, my next favorite is One Man Band by Pixar which is also linked above. This short, in contrast to Geri's Game, is heavily dependent on the music because of the story subject of the short.

1.   Progression.

-It begins with a girl listening to one man in a one-man-band play. He urges her to give him her coin. however, another one-man-band arrives that is also playing. Both compete for her attention and both are progressively getting more intense with their competition. This build-up leads to the climax.

- It seems the climax exists s between when the girl's coin falls into a drain because of the two men's movement and when the girl, when acquiring an instrument from the two men, gets a sack of coins for playing an instrument herself.

-Afterward, the girl taunts the two men by throwing two coins into the water fountain out of their reach.

2.   Conflict

-One conflict is between the two one-man bands who are trying to outdo the other to impress the girl and gain the coin.

- One conflict is the girl making a decision on what to do with the coin. Later, it could be viewed that there is a brief conflict between the two men and the girl after she acquires coins again.

3.   Characters

-Based on the way the camera is positioned at times to give us the perspective of how the girl sees the men, it seems that the girl functions as the protagonist of this short. Her initial motive is deciding who to give her coin to. Then her motive seems to be getting justice/revenge for her loss of coin brought by the two men.

-The two men have a very simple motive. Get the coin. However, the two men develop their characters enough to work together to attempt to get two coins out of a fountain at the end.

4.   Surprise.

- It definitely was a surprise to see the girl take an instrument, play it well, and then get a sack of coins out of the situation. I believe the first time I saw the short I expected her to cry and not react the way she did.

5.   Timing of information.

- The beginning times some of the information. It shows the poster before showing the actual character. Right after is another example. The camera cuts to farther back to allow the audience to see there isn't anyone listening to the man play, which the man already is aware of.

6.   Novelty

- There is a bit of novelty with the fact there is a brief bit of animation after the credits.

-Again, I believe the first time I saw the short I expected the girl to cry and not react the way she did.

7.   Visual Flow

-the camera angle used with the fountain makes the two men seem small. Before they were shown in angles that made them seem big. This is likely to emphasize the emotions they are likely feeling in response to the position of those coins.

- Earlier positioning of the camera and of the two men characters leads them to feel large and imposing to the audience half the time. This is likely to get us to relate to the girl's perspective of the competition of the two men.
