Fall_PrePro_Assignment_Describe camera movement or technique: Pan Movement (Focus on Slow pans vs Whip Pans)

Generally speaking, a pan is a movement from a camera that is in a fixed spot but is rotating horizontally.

This movement feels more natural because its similar to the movement your head creates when looking back and forth.

Things that might motivate the use of a pan and its speed

1. Changing the Energy of a shot (Speed depends on targeted energy)

-Change the perceived speed of a movement

    - change the energy/intimacy of dialogue

    - giving a reveal (Whether serious or comedic)

2. Being a Transition (Likely a Whip Pan)

3. To Show Cause and Effect (Could be both speeds, but likely a Whip Pan)

4. Moving the Camera to Better Focus on the Emphasis of a Scene (Could be both speeds, but likely a a slower Pan)

    - Following Motion

    -Establishing environment

Other Videos With More Information on Pans (Much of it about Whip Pans)

This video talks about energy, cause and effect, and transitions being motivators for the use of a whip pan camera movement being utilized.

This video also focuses on whip pan. The video itself is more a tutorial on how to make them, but it has good examples of pan whip transitions. It  also shows a bit of an energy change and the illusion of cause and effect with the use of pan whips. Some shots from earlier used gifs come from this video.

This video shows many general pan examples and has much more information about pans movements.
